My 'Three Kings Day' Experience

Ever since I was a little girl I grew up practicing the traditional celebration of Three Kings Day or as we say it in Spanish "Dia de Los Reyes Magos." See my father is Spanish, born and raised in the Canary Islands until he was twelve. When he was there, they would receive all of their holiday gifts on Three Kings Day instead of Christmas Day like the rest of the world does. So he would get toys and clothes and sometimes if he was good, even a little spare change.

Once my father immigrated to Venezuela when he was 12 years old with his family they slowly started to change their traditions to fit into the new customs that they were learning. So they slowly started to give big presents on Christmas Day and on Three Kings Day they would get a little something something....mostly money according to my dad. That is probably why I only ever remember receiving money for Three Kings Day and still do! My dad gifted me a couple of Euros to start my savings plan for my upcoming trip to Europe.

One of the big components about this day is to indulge in a really good meal very similar to Christmas Day dinner. This past Dia de Los Reyes I got the chance to spend it with my father and my stepmom's family. My father went all out and cooked braised pork ribs and yucca. 

My stepmom bought rosca de reyes, which is similar to king bread that is enjoyed in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, but this bread has a little baby Jesus inside of it. Tradition says, that if your piece of rosca has the baby Jesus then you are hosting the celebration for El Dia de la Candelaria. I luckily didn't get the baby Jesus but my dad sure did and if you know anything about my dad, you know he loves to host a party and cook good meals. 

Thanks to my awesome handy phones that Net10 provided me, I had a chance to take tons of pictures and connect with my family in other cities to see how they were celebrating the day.
