Bed Bugs in NYC: to go or not to go?

Over the last couple of months all I keep on hearing about is how there is a huge infestation of bed bugs in NYC. And today my favorite news source, wrote an article about how NYC bedbugs are scaring off tourist. As I finished reading the article, I kept on getting chills down my spine of how disgusting these little bugs are. Have you seen them yet? Well here is an up close and personal picture of one of them:

And here is another one of what could happen to your skin if you are infected:

I mean in Venezuela eso se llama una garrapata! But here in America we like to use nice words for these nasty little creatures. So now that they can be found everywhere including in movie theaters, dressing rooms, etc. across the city of NYC (and many other large cities in the US), I am wondering if I should go to NYC during the holidays.

So here I am, creating a pros and cons list of NYC:

  1. NYC Hot Dogs: by far the best! I could eat 5 in one day....literally I can, I did it last year when I went to NYC for the Rotary/United Nations Conference. My body wasn't happy with me the next day but the moment I was eating them, they were a fat kids wish come true.
  2. Central Park: I heart walking through Central Park, brings back memories from all of my childhood movies.
  3. NYC Holidays: I have been told that NYC completely transforms for the holidays and it is supposed to be beautiful.
  4. Broadway: I would love to see one of the classic Broadway shows such as Mamma Mia! I got the chance to see West Side Story in May when I went to NYC for People's En Espanol-50 Mas Bellos event. The event was fabulous and the Broadway show was awesome!!! Especially because one of my childhood friend from Caracas was on stage performing as one of the lead actors.
  5. Brasserie Les Halles: My favorite chef, Anthony Bourdain, has two restaurants in NYC and I got the opportunity to go in May (same time for the People event). It was the most delicious meal I have ever had (well at least in NYC, since my dad is by far mi chef numero 1, sorry Tony!). I would love to go back to Les Halles and have a nice steak. Ok my mouth is getting watery, i need to stop talking about food.
  6. Fifth Avenue and Macy's: Window shopping is my favorite thing to do, and what better place to do it than on la 5ta avenida de nueva york? O sea!!
  7. Hotel is for free: Marvin and I are getting a nice little treat by not having to pay for hotel during our stay (that's if we go) thanks for his mom! So free hotel and only have to pay for airfare is not that bad of a deal...don't you think?

Here comes the cons:

1. I don't want to get any of the following side effects from being bit by a bed bug or garrapata:
A number of health effects may occur due to bed bugs including skin rashes, psychological effects and allergic symptoms. Diagnosis involves both finding bed bugs and the occurrence of compatible symptoms. Treatment is otherwise symptomatic.
2. I am already crazy but seriously "pyschological effects" will probably just help me get to the level of loca I never wanted to get to!  (and not  in the Shakira song Loca kind of way)

Ok there aren't that many cons, but seriously bed bugs just creep me out. I might have to stay behind.

That's it...I'm going to NYC!

Singapore: Durian, dare to try it?
