As I was reading through this month's Travel + Leisure, I saw an ad for Amtrak which I thought was a huge coincidence since I had just finished writing a post where I included them as a fun and great way to be an eco-friendly traveler.
Normally, I don't write about ads that I see in travel magazines but this time I just had to! Amtrak is celebrating their National Train Day and from the looks of it, it's going to be a great program! On starting on May 5, Amtrak will be hosting a series of events nationwide where you can get a chance to learn more about Amtrak's history and have fun at the same time! In NYC, Amtrak will be at the Beacon Theatre where they will present the National Train Day Rock'n the Rail Way Concert with Gladys Knight! (If I was in NYC I would totally go to this event!)
And in my own neck of the woods, Chicago, on May 7 they are going to be presenting Hands On The Past: Mexican Contributions To The Railroad. It's the story of how thousands of Mexicans came to the U.S. under a guest worker program called the "Railroad Braceros." This exhibit is one that I will be checking out in two weeks, very interesting to learn how different Latinos took advantage of opportunities such as the "Railroad Braceros" to immigrate to the U.S.
Amtrak will also have special events/exhibits in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. So check out their website www.nationaltrainday.com to learn more about these events and about Amtrak!
On a side note: if you are planning a "road trip" this upcoming summer, Amtrak is going to be the most affordable way to see the U.S. and plus you can take as many friends as you'd like!
Till the next time...Feliz Viaje!
